Katherine Newman

Katherine (Kat) Newman was born in the “biggest little city in the world,” Reno, Nevada. She completed her undergraduate studies at Mount Holyoke College where she double majored in Gender Studies and Spanish. She also holds an M. Ed in social justice education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Kat has worked in non-profit and higher education for over a decade specializing in youth development, community outreach, and peer-based model interventions. She has designed youth programs, trainings, and taught high school and college level courses on topics of gender, sexuality, and race-based dialogues. Kat has experience working with self-harm reduction, suicide prevention, and reducing high-risk drinking. Her passion and advocacy work examine the intersections of mental health diagnoses, LGBTQIA+ issues, access to education, employment, and housing, using trauma-informed, trauma-centered approaches.

Kat created the Town of Amherst’s COVID-19 Ambassador program. Her local experience in higher education includes serving as UMass’s Team Positive Presence and Walk This Way Program Coordinator in the Off Campus Student Center and being a Wellbeing Educator at Amherst College in the Health Education Department.

Kat loves to build from the ground up (whether it be teams, programs, and now departments) and is attracted to fast-paced, complex work that centers relationship-building. She feels both excited and thankful to be working to support the work of CRESS.

When not working, Kat loves spending time with her dog Brady, competitively powerlifting, learning, traveling, doing home renovation projects, and eating snacks. Kat is a big fan of walking meetings, so please feel free to stop by to say hello and go for a stroll with her to your favorite spot in Amherst!

Brady Newman

Brady is an 11-year-old yellow lab/hound cross. He is a rescue originally from Tennessee and works as Kat Newman’s service dog. When Brady is not working, he enjoys playing fetch (tennis balls are his favorite), swimming, hiking, getting belly rubs, napping on his back (while snoring), performing a whole host of silly people tricks, and also eating snacks.

Brady loves to connect with people and is so excited to be back working in the Town of Amherst community.
