Black and white dog in front of yellow background, text: Amherst Dog Licenses

Don’t forget to license your dog for the 2022 year.  State law requires all dogs age six months or older to be licensed and wearing a tag (MGL c. 140, s. 137).  License fees are as follows: spayed/neutered dogs $5.00; intact male/female dogs $15.00.  Current rabies certificates for all dogs must also be presented at the time of licensing.  Please note that the last day to license your dog without incurring a penalty/late fee is May 31, 2022.  A $30.00 late fee will be imposed on all licenses renewed June 1, 2022 and after in accordance with Town Bylaws.

To date, all submitted requests for dog licenses have been processed.  If you have not received your new license/tag in the mail, you may not have included a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  Please call the Town Clerk’s office to verify.

You may renew licenses in person, by mail, online at:  www.amherstma.gov/payments, or by calling our Animal Control Officer at 413-478-7084.

If licensing for the first time, you may obtain a license by mail or in person only.

If mailing your request, please provide:

  1. Your name, address, telephone number, dog’s name, breed, color(s) and age;
  2. A check payable to the Town of Amherst for the appropriate amount;
  3. Certificate of spaying or neutering, if applicable;
  4. Current rabies vaccination certificate;
  5. A self-addressed, stamped, standard sized envelope.

All rabies and spay/neuter certificates will be returned to you with the license and tag.  Our mailing address is:  Town Clerk’s Office, 4 Boltwood Avenue, Amherst, MA 01002.
