Town Manager Paul Bockelman announced the appointment of Sean Mangano as the new Finance Director for the Town of Amherst. The appointment is subject to review by the Town Council which is expected to act at its meeting on April 27th.

Sean Mangano has served the Amherst Pelham Regional School District for nearly a decade in progressively more responsible positions. He began his career as a Budget Analyst, was promoted to Accountant, and then elevated to be Director of Finance for the District. In December, Sean left his position with the School District to explore opportunities in the private sector.

At the District, Sean provided financial leadership for the school’s $50+ million budget including payroll, accounts payable, accounting, treasury, budgeting, grants management, food services, capital planning, and debt service.

Amherst Town Manager Paul Bockelman said, “I am thrilled to add Sean to our Finance Team at this critical time. The next 12-24 months will be the most challenging time for Town and School finances in decades, requiring enormous creativity and sensitivity.”

Bockelman added, “Sean brings a keen understanding of municipal finance and the interplay between school and municipal budgets. He knows the school and Town financial systems from the ground up and has a detailed knowledge of regional school district finances and, specifically, the intricacies and nuances of the four-town Amherst Pelham Regional School District.”

Mangano will complement the Town’s existing, superb finance team who have all taken on additional responsibilities over the years. “I really want to thank Treasurer Cheri Boucher, Collector Jennifer LaFountain, and especially Comptroller and Interim Finance Director Sonia Aldrich for leading our finance team and providing such excellent financial stewardship during these past several years,” Bockelman concluded.

Mangano has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, and a Master’s of Science Degree in Accounting. He is a Licensed School Business Administrator and a Certified Massachusetts Public Procurement Official.

The Finance Director screening committee was chaired by the Director of Human Resources Evelyn Rivera-Riffenburg and included Assistant Town Manager David Ziomek and former Finance Committee member and Town Administrator Bernie Kubiak.
