A warming place for homeless individuals will be opening on Monday, December 14, 2009. The warming place is located at 434 N Pleasant Street, Amherst at the First Baptist Church. The doors will be open from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM daily. The Center for Human Development – a Springfield-based social service agency – will operate the warming place and will also be responsible for the recruitment and training of volunteer support and the day to day operations. For those who are interested in volunteering, please contact Ruth Taylor, Community Development Administrative Assistant for the Town of Amherst at 413 259-3117.
The Committee on Homelessness is delighted that the First Baptist Church is hosting the warming place for the entire season. We wish to extend our heart-felt thank you to the Church for stepping up to the plate and offering this wonderful site. We would also like to especially thank the Center for Human Development for agreeing to operate this program.
The Committee also wishes to thank the Unitarian Universalist Society and the Mercyhouse for offering their space for the warming place. We are grateful that they enthusiastically embraced the project and were willing to lend a helping hand to our neighbors who are homeless
The warming place welcomes individuals who are 18 years of age and older. It is a place to come to for warmth and companionship. Referral service on housing, emergency shelter options and other social services will be made available to guests. Hot drinks and snacks will be offered through the night. A continental breakfast will be available for everyone.
