Routine water sampling at Puffer’s Pond on June 24th revealed higher than normal levels of E.coli bacteria at the main beach. This is not an uncommon occurrence at many similar ponds in our region this time of year and is likely due to recent heavy rains and runoff. Out of an abundance of caution the Town is recommending that people do not swim at the main beach (State St.) until further notice.
We are following all precautions provided by the Amherst Health Department and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Additional samples were taken today and we hope to have results back tomorrow, Thursday, June 27th. Until then, the main beach will remain closed for swimming.
Notices are posted at the main beach in prominent locations. Updates will be provided via the Amherst Town website, www.amherstma.gov, in the News & Announcements section, Town of Amherst social media channels and posted notices at the beach.”
