[ARCHIVED] Gabriel Ting Promoted to Police Captain

Ting Promotion

Chief Scott P. Livingstone is pleased to announce the promotion of Amherst Police Lieutenant Gabriel Ting to the rank of captain effective February 8, 2019. 


Lieutenant Ting was appointed as a patrol officer with the Amherst Police Department in April of 1997.  He was assigned patrol duties until his reassignment to the detective bureau in September of 2004.  As a detective, Ting obtained extensive specialized training in criminal investigation, sexual assault and child abuse. During his tenure in the detective bureau he served as a criminal, homicide, arson, sexual assault, hate crimes, background and computer/internet crimes investigator.  While assigned to the detective bureau he was member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce and Hampshire/Franklin County Drug Task Force.  He also served on the Coplogic development team and was the Kidcare ID coordinator.

Ting was promoted to the rank of sergeant in September 2010 and was assigned as a patrol supervisor.  As a sergeant, he managed the crime scene and bicycle patrol units in addition to the riot arrest team.  He was also a member of the Northwestern D.A.’s Office of Child Sexual Predator Task Force.  On October 28, 2016, Ting was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and was assigned as the officer in charge of the patrol division and center sector commander.  As a lieutenant he was in charge of the department’s fleet, scheduling, recruitment, information technology/hardware, and bicycle patrol unit. He also served as the accreditation manager for the department.

Ting received his diploma from Amherst Regional High School in 1991.  He graduated in 1997 from the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Academy in Agawam, a member of the 28th Municipal Police Officer Class.   Ting received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Western New England College.  

                                                               

Ting is the son of Agnes Ting and the late James Ting of Amherst, Massachusetts.  He currently resides in Belchertown with his wife Chelsea and two children.
