Chief Scott P. Livingstone is pleased to announce the promotion of Amherst Police Sergeant Brian T. Johnson to the rank of Lieutenant effective December 27, 2017. Lieutenant Johnson was promoted after an extensive selection process which included interviews with Chief Scott P. Livingstone, Town Manager Paul Bockelman and Human Resources Director Deborah Radway. This promotion will fill the position that was vacated with the retirement of Lieutenant Jerry Millar.
Lieutenant Johnson was appointed as a Patrol Officer with the Amherst Police Department on April 7, 1997. He was assigned patrol duties until his reassignment to the Detective Bureau in June of 2003. During his tenure in the detective bureau he conducted criminal investigations of major incidents and crimes. While assigned to the Detective Bureau he was the liaison between the police department and the District Attorney’s Office and the District and Superior courts. He was also the departments lead officer of sex offender registry compliance and a member of the Hampshire County Drug Task Force.
Lieutenant Johnson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in July 2008 and was assigned as a patrol supervisor. During this time he supervised the management of the department’s Field Officer Training Program, was the lead instructor of the ALICE program, including the implementation and training of Amherst Public School personnel. In addition, he was the coordinator of the Motorcycle Unit, in charge of staffing, training and equipment.
Johnson graduated in 1997 from the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Academy in Agawam, a member of the 28th municipal police officers training class. Lieutenant Johnson is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and obtained a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College. He resides in South Deerfield and has two children.
