Amherst A-Z, 1759-2009 is now available for purchase. Published by the Amherst Historical Society for the 250th, this highly readable book is loaded with photos and brief commentary on more than 100 Amherst topics. Look under “C” to find out about Amherst’s Cold War Bunker, Collapsing Skirt Factory, Cambodian Community, Curragh district, Conservation Areas, Civil War Tablets, Community-Supported Agriculture, Cushman, and the Conch Shell used to call early citizens to Town Meeting. Look under “S” for Schools, Shoes in the Chimney, Slavery (which existed here through the 1770s), Save the Drake, Survival Center, Salamander Crossing and Sand Dunes (yes, sand dunes in Amherst). “U” is for Ultimate and Uncle Wiggily. Amherst A-Z was written by historian Elizabeth Sharpe, edited by Debbie Gabor and designed by Mary Zyskowski.
