Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase matunda ya Kwanzaa meaning “first fruits of the harvest”. Founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga to honor family, culture, and community. Kwanzaa is celebrated throughout the African Diaspora starting December 26th and ending January 1st. This celebration is derived by seven principles. Kwanzaa is a celebration of African heritage and culture.
