Patrol Division

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is under the command of Captain Gabriel Ting. The backbone of any police organization is its Patrol Division. Members of the Patrol Division are uniformed members of the Police Department that provide traditional police services to the community.

The Patrol Division operates on a 24-hour/7-day-a-week schedule so that there are always officers within the Town of Amherst providing protection and services to the citizens. The department responds to over 24,000 calls for service each year with the vast majority of those calls handled by officers in Patrol.

Patrol is the largest division within the Police Department with 38 sworn patrol officers, sergeants and lieutenants assigned. Patrol officers and patrol sergeants work 8-hour, fixed shifts, 24-hours per day, 365 days per year. 3 lieutenants work rotating shifts and serve as officers in charge.

Officers are equipped with marked patrol cars complete with computers and other equipment needed to perform their duties. Those officers assigned to the Patrol Division spend the majority of their 8 hour shift working from their vehicle while out in the community so they are accessible and available to the public.
