- Fort River Watershed Improvements - Culvert Replacements
In August 2023, the Town of Amherst was awarded a Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program Action Grant for work to improve the Fort River Watershed. The MVP Program awarded Amherst $170,000 to begin work to replace three aging culverts in the watershed. All three culverts are undersized and show signs of deterioration, the long term goal is to replace them with crossings that are larger and more open to improve flood resilience and allow for wildlife passage.
The MVP Grant provides funding for the investigation, design, and permitting of three culvert replacements. The culverts are located on Middle St at Plum Brook, Potwine Ln at Muddy Brook, and West Pomeroy Ln at an unnamed tributary to the Fort River. See the adjacent map for culvert locations. The grant funds will support Amherst working with a consultant and contractors to collect data on the culvert locations including hydrologic and hydraulic, wetland, and geotechnical information.
The Town will host several meetings to engage community members in discussion and decisions regarding the Fort River watershed health. Amherst has engaged Fuss & O’Neill as the consultant to complete the data collection, design and permitting for this project. The kick-off meeting was held. Throughout the month of November, contractors will complete the wetland delineation and survey of the three culvert locations.
