Recreational Marijuana


Amherst is committed to a safe and deliberate implementation of the recreational marijuana law that both protects the health and safety of Amherst residents and respects the 74% of Amherst voters who approved the ballot question. 65% of Amherst residents are below the age of 25, and over 30% are under the age of 20. Amherst’s population is in constant flux, with nearly 5,000 new undergraduate college students arriving at UMass, Amherst College, and Hampshire College each year.

Recreational Marijuana Information

  • NEW: Community Outreach Meeting for MassMedicum at 5:30pm on July 11, 2019, at the Courtyard by Marriott (423 Russell Street, Hadley) to discuss a proposed recreational marijuana retail establishment at 85 University Drive. Interested members of the community are encouraged to ask questions and receive answers from company representatives about the proposed facility and operations. NOTE: Community outreach meetings are required by the state prior to applying for a recreational marijuana license. These meetings are not hosted by the Town of Amherst, or any Board or Committee associated with the Town. Any such meeting will be posted to the Town Calendar under Community (Public).
  • NEW: Community Outreach Meeting for Silver Therapeutics at 5:30pm on July 10, 2019, at the Bistro 63 (63 North Pleasant Street, Amherst) to discuss a proposed recreational marijuana retail establishment at 37 Boltwood Walk. There will be an opportunity for the public to ask questions. NOTE: Community outreach meetings are required by the state prior to applying for a recreational marijuana license. These meetings are not hosted by the Town of Amherst, or any Board or Committee associated with the Town. Any such meeting will be posted to the Town Calendar under Community (Public).
  • Guidance for Recreational Marijuana Retail Establishments in Amherst (April 23, 2019) Please note that Amherst is not currently accepting submittals for retail establishments. Non-retail establishment submittals are accepted on a rolling basis.

Medical Marijuana



The Amherst Select Board has issued letters of support for five medical marijuana dispensaries in town. Four applicants have received their preliminary certificate of registration from the state Department of Health and three have received conditional Special Permits from the Amherst Zoning Board of Appeals.
