The 21 member committee is charged with preparing and recommending to the Select Board a program of celebrations to commemorate Amherst's 250th anniversary in 2009, and to implement recommendations approved by the Select Board. To ensure the broadest possible inclusion of ideas in the planning process, membership includes representatives from the Historical Commission, Leisure Services and Supplemental Education Commission, Town/Commercial Relations Committee, Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce, Amherst Historical Society, Council on Aging, Amherst School Committee, Farm Committee, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst College and Hampshire College, Five Colleges, Inc. and seven members at-large.

The committee is strongly encouraged to reach out to other parts of the community for input and participation in the planning. The Committee shall hold at least two public hearings, one early (held March 21, 2004), one later in the planning process (to be held in the Fall 2005), for the purpose of gathering and incorporating contributions of thoughts and wishes from the public.

To serve as a clearinghouse for budget information. To refine a master town/school/library budget development calendar. To review a long-range financial projection that includes prior years results, current year approved budget, revenues/expenditures for the current and next three fiscal years, and reserves.

To develop a common understanding of issues related to budget priorities and of methods of sharing resources ultimately leading to a recommended course of action. To disseminate the groups recommendations and conclusions to the public.
