The Town of Amherst was recently recognized for Outstanding
Leadership in Energy by Mass Energy. Each year at its annual meeting, the
non-profit recognizes organizations that have contributed to making energy more
affordable and environmentally sustainable in Massachusetts. Sustainability
Coordinator Stephanie Ciccarello, Facilities Director Ron Bohonowicz, and
Assistant Town Manager M. David Ziomek were present to accept the award on
behalf of the Town. The recognition was related to work the Town has done
to switch part of the municipal fleet to electric vehicles, to build a solar
array on a former landfill, and to run numerous educational sustainability
programs, groups and fairs for residents.
In 2014, the Town teamed up with Mass Energy to offer residents
yet another option to green their electricity. Eighty-eight residents
made the switch, which prompted Mass Energy to donate $3,500 to Amherst to
assist with the purchase of another electric vehicle.
