Winter Parking

There is no overnight parking allowed on the streets or surface parking lots in the Town of Amherst from December 1st through April 1st of each year. This ban is enforced from 2:00 am to 6:00 am, regardless of snow on the ground or in the forecast.

During this period, overnight parking is allowed in the lower level of the parking garage. Motorists should be aware that the garage is pre-paid metered parking from 8:00am to 8:00pm, 7 days a week, requiring a trip to the garage for meter payment during that time.

Overnight parking is also allowed in the metered side of the Pray Street Lot, which is located in a loop of private parking south of Kendrick Place. These meters are enforced from 8:00am through 6:00pm, Monday through Saturday only.
As part of a temporary expansion of overnight winter parking, beginning February 1 overnight parking is allowed in
  1. The Town owned portion of the lot behind CVS (the northern end, where spaces are numbered and metered), and
  2. Amity Street between North Pleasant Street and Lincoln Avenue in even house number side spaces on even number calendar days (the PeoplesBank side on February 2nd, 4, 6 etc.), and the odd house numbered side on odd days (the Jones Library side on the 1st, 3, 5 etc).

To allow for plowing and snow removal in the CVS Lot, it will be closed from 7:00 am to 9:00 am  daily.
To allow for plowing and snow removal on Amity Street, the off side (even on odd days) needs to be closed to new arrivals 7:00 to 9:00 am.

Daytime permit users and meter users arriving to Amity Street before 9:00 am must use even numbered side on even number days.  Those arriving after 9:00 am can choose either side.

Overnight permit users must move the vehicle to the correct side of the street by 7:00 am.  To stay after 8:00 am, the vehicle should be in permit space as well (not the metered portion of Amity St or in CVS lot) or risk meter violations.Phone with questions, 413-259-3020.

Otherwise, vehicles are ticketed and towed nightly, at the owner's expense. Students are encouraged to leave cars in appropriate campus lots, following the University Snow Parking policy found at, and use buses to Town Center.

Permits are not valid for parking overnight on any street but Amity Street during the overnight parking ban.
